# Signing with a private-key certificate installed or accessible in the Windows certificate store

From the Windows operating system, when the configuration has indicated that one of the locations of the certificate to be used is the Windows store (either because it is installed there or because it is in the cloud but accessible through the provider's CSP), signing is performed with the desktop application **Editran-Firma**, so it must be installed on the computer at the time of signing.

## Installation of the desktop application on the signing workstations

The application installer can be downloaded by clicking on the link **download it from here** from the first window shown in each signing request. In this way, it will be saved in the browser's downloads folder.

![Download desktop application](https://1386330368-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F2jqgE5yyM3S58JKHROiz%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-a3512120ca2187d1cccef30fea71e66c3530f8fb%2F01_descarga_aplicacion_escritorio.png?alt=media)

Alternatively, the system administrator can obtain the application installer from the directory `[Connect installation directory]\EditranConnect\signs\app` from the Connect installation on the server to install it on each signing workstation.

Once the application installer is on the signing computer (either because it has been downloaded or because it has been transferred manually), proceed as explained below.

The installation requires administrator privileges on the computer. When the installer is run, a welcome screen is displayed on which you must press the button **Next**.

Next, choose the installation directory:

And finally, indicate the server (ip/hostname, without https\://) and the listening port of the service **Editran Connect Sign** of the machine where Connect is deployed.

After pressing the button **Next**, the application will be installed.

## Signing process

Once the signer accesses the file details and, if applicable according to format and permissions, has viewed it, they will press the button **Sign** to begin the process.

![Sign button](https://1386330368-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F2jqgE5yyM3S58JKHROiz%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-e564010f8a1f21d7e201f1aaef8f8ad12a37614b%2F06_boton_firmar.png?alt=media)

In each signing request, a pop-up window will remind the user of the need to have the desktop application in order to sign and will provide the download link.

When the button **Sign**, a new window notifies that the Editranff-Firma desktop application is going to be used. Press **Open**.

A new window appears informing about the processes that are being carried out and, depending on the protection level with which the certificate was installed, another window will open informing that the certificate is going to be used (medium level) or also requesting that its password be entered (high level, recommended level).

Once that window is accepted, the signing will be carried out and a final window will inform whether the operation succeeded or failed.

The user is returned to the list of files filtered by status `Pending for me to sign`, so the file that was just signed will no longer be shown. However, if the user unchecks that filter, they can view the newly signed file and its overall and individual statuses with respect to each signer, if desired.

From the list of files, the signer can repeat the process described with the rest of the files that are still pending their action.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.editran.onesait.com/documentacion-editran/connect-3.2-en/firma/firmadeficheros/detallefichero/firmar/firma_cert_windows.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
